Eighty-D - First and Second Demos (2002-2003)
Eighty-D was a punk ska band formed around 2001 or so by some friends of mine at Central High School where I went in Philadelphia. There were different early line-ups but Billy played guitar and sang, Sharky played drums, Adam played bass, Rich sang (not on the demo) and Billy's cousin whose name I don't remember played lead guitar. I was pretty good friends with Billy and when he played me their first demo, I was blown away by how good of a songwriter he was. It was during an era when there was a lot of really good ska coming out mixed with pretty aggressive overly distorted guitars ala Against All Authority, Link-80 and Leftover Crack. And Eighty-D was definitely in their moment. Unfortunately, the only track title I can remember from the first demo is track 1, "Leroy X" but I still love this whole demo that was probably recorded some time in 2002. I did some mastering on it to tighten it up a bit.

By this second demo, Eighty-D and my own bands (The Dumb Fat Kids and Piston Honda) had already played a bunch of local shows together. At this point, there was no more lead guitar and Rich never sang on the demos so it was recorded as a three-piece. Honestly, I think it probably sounds tighter this way and Sharky was always an amazing drummer. There were multiple bassists in Eighty-D and |I am not sure which one is featured on this second demo. But after a new bassist committed a heinous act, I volunteered to step in and play bass with the band around 2004 and basically, we were a 3-piece for the next year that we played together. I remember the singer Rich showing up to, maybe, 2 or 3 practices but I don't remember him actually singing anything. He was at most of the shows though and he was a pretty fun guy. One night at our basement venue The Fat Cave, he smashed a guitar and it looked just like the cover of London Calling but I'm not certain that whoever's guitar that was actually wanted it to be smashed. When I started practicing with Billy and Sharky, I was shocked by just how many songs they had. I was learning dozens of songs on bass with walking basslines as they were being played at lightning speed and I often didn't know the name of the song or which one I was even playing when we got on-stage. But we were all pretty good at what we did, and we pulled out a lot of great covers too since Billy and I could both sing. I'm not on this second demo either but it has a new 3-piece version of "Leroy X", a song called "Leroy X 2" and another song I don't know the name of. I did some mastering on this one as well. It's really good and I hope you enjoy it.
